How do I choose the right BLE asset tracking solution? – Real Time Locating Services (RTLS) Pro Tips – Part 3
Assuming that you have already decided that a BLE RTLS solution is the right fit to your business, you first have to respond to the following questions before moving forward:
a. What kind of problem do I try to solve? Do I need to quickly locate assets? Do I need to track their movements? Do I need a general overview of my assets’ location? This is the main question to answer before going further, because solutions (and costs) can differ substantially depending on your needs.
b. Accuracy – what is the accuracy level required for locating my assets? In order to use BLE Beacons, I should know that the accuracy level is somewhere between 1 to 70 m. Depending on you business, you should decide if you need up to 1m accuracy, room-level or just floor-level accuracy.
c. Assets: what is the size, type and position of the assets? If you are trying to track very small assets, you may encounter problems when attaching beacons to them. However, beacon-based solutions are recommended if you are tracking medium or large sized items. More than that, if you need to quickly find similar or stacked assets within your premises, you should consider using beacons equipped with buzzers(to make a buzz when you are in the proximity of the asset with the mobile device, helping you precisely and easily identify the asset you are looking for).
d. Do I need gateways? Gateways are devices which collect all the data from all the beacons and stream them into your CMS. These devices are not necessary if you have workers or staff wandering across the floor equipped with a Bluetooth-enabled mobile device – smartphone or tablet – with data connection. Gateway systems are mainly necessary if you want up-to-date information about you assets’ location at any time, day or night or if you do not have operators on the floor with mobile devices.
e. What is the allocated budget? – last, but not least, you should decide how much money you can spend on this solution. Depending on the size of the budget, you can get higher or lower accuracy or different features. If you need the best accuracy, you should be prepared to pay more than, for example, room-level accuracy
